Mar 11, 2014 For developers of FOSS video NLE (Non Linear Editing) software, the choice is arguably determined by available development resources. Projects tend to start off with a basic function editor, with. The best free alternative. Olive is a free non-linear video editor aiming to provide a fully-featured alternative to high-end professional video editing software. Nonlinear editing differs from linear editing in several ways. First, video from the sources is recorded to the editing computer’s hard drive or RAID array prior to the edit session. Next, rather than laying video to the recorder in sequential shots, the segments are assembled using a video editing software program.

Upgrade to Studio for $299 is optional but not required. See More
You can't edit in Resolve while rendering a project. You can put multiple timelines in a queue or build a render-server (Studio Version + 2nd PC required). But you can only cancel rendering to continue working. See More
DaVinci Resolve is a great program, especially regarding that 99% of the features you need are free. The only thing I stumbled over was the 3D camera tracker in Fusion. It is under constant development and although I didn't pay, the e-mail customer service always replies within 24h. See More

Very fast and efficient. Coming from 3D modeling, texturing, animation, and rendering software, I am used to having to learn thousands of different tools. I have never seen NLE related software this complex yet easy to use. It even adjusts the interface for 4K monitors so you can read and see icons. Great real-time preview with complex effects assisted by hardware. Completely free with no strings attached. Great for amateurs and the majority of small studio commercial work but the pros will want the Studio version for $299. The price is ridiculously low for professionals who can recoup the cost (and than some) in a single small project. Studio adds full GPU support and many advanced features for the most demanding projects. See More
Fusion, the VFX-Tab in Resolve includes trackers, 3D-scenes, 3D-particles, 3D-Camera tracker (paid), painting and a lot more. See More
Davinci Resolve is updated regularly and offers a completely free version that includes almost every needed feature! The paid version is only $299, or comes free with Black Magic cameras, and includes installation on two CPUs as well as unlimited updates. The program not only included the Resolve Color Grading software but features Fusion, one of the premiere studio level compositing and effects packages and Fairlight, a complete DAW! The integration of the programs is completely seamless, just click a tab at the bottom of the workspace. A full featured and intuitive delivery/output rendering program is fully integrated. See More

It includes powerful editing, great VFX, insane colour-grading and comprehensive audio-tools in one app. You don't need several programs and worry about exporting between them. See More

Davinci Resolve is constantly being updated to make a better product. If there are no Davinci Resolve Video Editing Filters for DR, you can use the OFX ones. Nothing is worse than having experience with a certain filter...and it is not available for your NLE system. See More
Adobe Premiere Pro CC
The cost of the adobe system over a 3 year span is significantly higher than other comparable editors. Their licensing for schools is particularly problematic as updates aren't available for site licenses in a timely manner, leaving us with compatibility issues with students using their own licenses at home.
